Iron Cross 2nd Class
1914

The Iron Cross is perhaps one of the more recognizable medals in the world. This example is in the second class and is marked 1914. The front has a crown on the upper arm, a "W" in the center, and the date 1914 on the lower arm. The reverse has a Crown at the top of the Upper arm. Below the crown are the letters "FW". In the center are three oak leaves, and on the lower arm there is the date 1813.

The cross hangs from the correct pre-WWII black and white ribbon. This example is magnetic as it is actually made of iron, and has a hallmarked suspension ring (also magnetic). It is marked "MFH" (see pic below). There are only a few spots, easily seen in the photo, where the black has come off of the cross.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Iron Cross and it's history, I urge you to get a copy of The Iron Time: A History of the Iron Cross by by Stephen Thomas Previtera.  It is the most complete history on this medal I have read to date.
