The
King Carol I Centennial Medal
Medalia
"Centenarul Regelui Carol I"
1939
The King Carol I Centennial Medal ( Medalia "Centenaurul
Regelui Carol
I") was instituted by Royal Decree No. 1915 on May 5, 1939. It was
awarded
to military and civilians, or those who had been conferred the order
"Michael
the Brave" or the medal for "Military Virtue" and to the civil servants
in the Ministry of the National Defense. Persons awarded this medal for
their contribution to the army equipping fund also received a bar on
the
ribbon, bearing the inscription "Pro Patria".
The example above has original 1938-47 style ribbon with
Pro-Patria
Bar. The medal is uncleaned and in great condition with the only damage
(slight) on the bottom left edge of the medal. It looks as if it was
dropped
on a hard surface and was consequently marred. You can barely made it
out
looking on the bottom right side of the reverse scan.
An interesting note is that this medal has different
castings. On medal
#1 above, the artist's name is shown as "W BECKER" and as "EW BECKER"
on
the medal below. The medal below has the seal of King Michael just to
the
right of the horse's left rear hoof below the artist's name. The other
casting does not have this seal, but has two initials "MN" on the
'ground'
in front of the horse that are not present on the medal above.
The difference is that one was awarded to members of the
military, and
the other to civil workers in the service of the King. Unfortunatly, at
this point I do not know which version was awarded to whom.
