Medal
of Ferdinand I
Medalia "Ferdinand I"
1929-1947
The medal of Ferdinand I was instituted on 10 May,
1929 under the same regulations which founded the Order of Ferdinand
I. The medal was used to award merit in the "uniting of all
Romanians into a single state." In practice, it seems that
most soldiers who participated in the First World War (and previous
conflicts) and were still in military service were awarded this medal.
The medal is a bronze medallion surmounted by a
crown. Its obverse displays
the effegy of King Ferdinand I of Romania. Around the bust, is
written
in raised lettering. "FERDINAND I REGE AL ROMANIEI".
This is translated to English as, "Ferdinand I
King of the Romanians".
Above the medallion is the Romanian crown.
The reverse of the
medal depicts the cross of Ferdinand and the dates of his rule; 1914 to
1927.
The ribbon is navy blue with a central stripe of
dark red or purple. Crossed
swords could be authorized for military recipients.
